Picture of Health

With acclaimed salt lagoons and superb climate, our area is the heart of the healthiest region in Europe.

Its reputation as a mecca of health, has earned this description from the World Health Organisation, “Almost as perfect an environment as it is possible to obtain.

Not only does the Costa Blanca enjoy warmth, sunshine and a remarkably low rainfall, almost all the year round – the concentrated salt in the lagoons also draws extra moisture out of the atmosphere. This results in a uniquely dry climate, especially beneficial for conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis and asthma, identifying the region as one of the healthiest places in the world to live.

Dr Malcolm Carruthers, one of Britain’s leading experts on stress and heart disease, comments, “People suffering from arthritis and rheumatism experience freedom from pain and regain mobility, and there are documented cases of recoveries from these and other serious disorders as well as marked rejuvenation, revitalisation restoration of libido and other benefits.

Dr Carruthers is so impressed with the Costa Blanca, he believes the government, as well as companies, should investigate the benefits of sending people there. “The burden on the NHS could be greatly relieved if doctors had the option to prescribe health breaks in the sun at an early stage of breakdown,” he says.

Dr Nicholas Armand Smith, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, prepared a report for the disabled following a recent visit to the region. “This is an excellent location,” he says. “Disabled people, including those using wheelchairs, will enjoy the superb climate and have access to good health care, in both the private and the State sector.”

Commenting on two local hospitals, he says, “Both are well spoken of and offer modern facilities including accident and emergency services and all the usual specialities, such as maternity and paediatrics. Every patient has their own room and there is a full range of consulting, investigative and in-patient facilities including operating theatres."

Spain has reciprocal health care arrangements with the United Kingdom. Travellers simply require an E111 form, obtained and stamped at any Post Office.

  1. Traditional Spanish family seaside resort, where ‘lager louts’ are not catered for.
  2. The beaches are regarded by many as the safest and cleanest beaches in the entire Mediterranean.
  3. Many people testify to an improvement in their health and lifestyle since moving to the region.

Market Garden of Europe

The Mouth of the River Segura reveals the fertile lowlands and the market gardens of Guardamar, with their wealth of vegetables and lemon groves. Venturing further inland to the districts of the Vinalopo Mitja and Vinalopo Alto, as well as enjoying deliciously fresh local cuisine, you can sample the best of the local wines (Mnovar, Novela, Sax, Villena, Biar, Aspe, Monovar del Cid and Petrer). The high quality and variety will surprise you.

Continuing on to Elche (21 kilometres from Guardamar) you can stroll through Europe’s largest Palm Forest. It’s a delight to lose yourself amongst the subtropical gardens of the Huerto del Cura (the Priest’s Orchard).

What has been described as Spain’s unique winter market garden is centred on the nearby provincial capital of Murcia. With its towering Gothic Cathedral and graceful old mansions, Murcia also coasts several of the many fine restaurants in Southern Spain.
